Gimme an “H”!

Wallpaper for "Pittsburg"

I love a lot of things about Pittsburgh. There’s food and art and science and nature and more, but there are things that rocket up to the top of that list as easy favorites. Bridges. Pierogies. Dinosaurs all over the place. But mostly, and you’ll hear this all over the country, its the people.

Long ago, in an effort to standardize city names, President Benjamin Harrison signed a declaration that meant all of the Pittsburghs in the U.S. — and there were several — would lose their “H”. “Pittsburgh” would become “Pittsburg”. But the people in the Pittsburg in Pennsylvania were having none of that silliness, and so after a lengthy public campaign by her citizenry, we got our “H” back.

One could say that the resistance to conform was old-fashioned, against the tide of progress. I see it as one more way that the people of the region recognized their identity and clung to it, fought for it, government mandates be damned.

We were Pittsburg for 21 years… but then things got back to normal.

You can find the above design available as a wallpaper on Steeltown Anthem.

In an effort to round out some of my design skills, I’ve been learning some HTML and CSS. It is stretching this print designer’s brain to its limits, and in the best way possible.

And I’m getting all A’s, and not because I am married to the teacher, I swear.

Thank you

Oh man oh man oh man

So: on February 1st, 2012, “Monster Haiku Vol. 1” launched for presale. Four months later, Second Block Studio wrote a check to March of Dimes.

If you purchased a book or poster or painting, if you attended the Wildcard show on April 13, if you tweeted about Monster Haiku or liked or shared us on Facebook, you helped us raise over $3,000 for March of Dimes.

yes i said over $3k

…with a comma and EVERYTHING. THANK YOU!

The support we got for this project was truly overwhelming and we are so grateful to everyone who helped to make this journey a success. It has been one of the most satisfying creative endeavors I’ve ever been a part of, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Here’s to “Monster Haiku Vol. 2”…

Me with Mapes and other monsters

Some of the monsters born on this blog made it into a book I made called “Monster Haiku”! There are 26 full-color spreads featuring Will Rutherford’s sweet haiku poetry.

We pre-sold the books from Feb 1 – Mar 3, and had an art show featuring the books as well as cards, posters, and original art on Friday, April 13.

100% of the profits from this project benefit March of Dimes. It looks like we’ll be able to donate more than $2,500, which is AWESOME. Yay for babies (and monsters).

Being Number 1

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Rudy’s talents made him a real catch in Chameleon City. He was quite the lady’s lizard.

Or rather, he was. Regretfully, he was eaten by a bigger dumber chameleon one day after lunch.

Life lesson: Being the best can be rough(age).
